Our expectations of interactions with established services are rapidly changing. The notion that products and services can stand as separate entities under a single umbrella is being challenged by a technologically enabled product & service culture, where people have access to everything at any time. Government and education services, which have historically operated in “siloed departments” are being expected to operate as cohesive entities. The resulting environment requires service providers to consider the needs & behaviors of their users - or risk alienating customers at a time when customer satisfaction ratings are increasingly being measured and targeted as part of a larger value proposition. This talk outlines the core principles, tools & methodologies of User Centered Design - often referred to as experience design or design thinking. Participants will view examples of how these principles have been applied to other problem areas that are analogous to problems in the field of library science. Participants will also have the opportunity to actively reflect and question how these tools & methodologies might be applied to the world of services offered by librarians and library scientists.
